I accidentally figured out how to curl my hair with my straightener when I went a little crazy trying to flip it out once, but it was a mistake that became a style I wear on a regular basis. When I use a curling iron, my hair usually falls into soft waves. In this style, the loose curls hold for much longer, and I don't even need to use hairspray. It's a lot easier than it looks, and it's faster for me than using a curling iron. All it takes is just takes a few easy steps!

Before you start: This technique works best when done with a 1-inch flat iron. I use this one, if you're curious. This style can be done on any hair type, dried naturally or with a blow dryer.
Step 1: Divide hair and take a .5 to 1-inch strand to style.
Step 2: Clamp hair in the flat iron as if straightening it. Drag down piece of hair until you reach the point that you want the strand to start curling.
Picture
Step 3: While still clamped, take the flat iron and flip it 180º at the point you want the curl to start.
Step 4: Continue to drag iron down strand of hair with the straightener still flipped all the way down the entire strand.
Picture
Tip 1: Once you flip the straightener, you might have to use your other hand to feed the rest of the strand through the flat iron to make sure it doesn't run off the heated plates.
Tip 2: The slower you drag the straightener down a strand, the tighter the curl will be.
Tip 3: Separate different sized strands for a more natural curled look.
Picture
Repeat on your whole head, and you'll be left with loose curls.
Picture
I like this option because I only need one tool to produce multiple styles. Next time you need to dress up an outfit, consider using your straightener for these loose curls.

I don't know if this will work with my hair. I have long, thick, and very straight hair . Usually it doesn't curl ! It also will take very long for me to curl, and even then it falls flat very easily . Do you think this will work with my hair ?

yes it will work. my hair is pretty long and very thick, it is also very sick. My hair would not hold a curl for anything unless it was completely stiff with hairspray. Now that i use my straightener i barely spray any hairspray at all! I use day old hair because it works better personally. I still shower and get my hair wet just don't put any shampoo or conditioner in it! hope this helps!((:

I have the exact same problem. Whenever I curl my hair , I always use this method. It's actually the first time I've seen it online. My hair never curls with a curling iron but this always works for me!

Yes it can still work on thick straight hair. You will need a professional flat iron that gets really hot. My favorite (I am a stylist) is the Chi flat iron. You can get them at target for around $129. Blow or air dry hair and use a thermal spray to protect and help hold curl. Spray thermal spray (I like Redken's Iron Silk) on each section as you go rather then spraying on your whole head in the beginning. Use smaller sections for more curl and better hold. It takes more patience but it will work. Put your hair up on the top of your head with a scrunchie at night to keep the curls pretty for the next day(s). Remember don't wash hair every day if you don't have to. Your hair will love you for it :)

My Hair doesn't ever hold a curl. It always falls out, no matter how much hair spray and what not i use. I started curling my hair with a straightener and it hold everytime, without hairspray or anything. (:

No matter how curl resistant your hair is, it can hold a curl. The most important step in this case is PRODUCT. Use one that promotes hold and that can be applied to damp hair and blow dried in. I personally like Kevin Murphy products very much (check out his website for tutorials on how to use use all of his products)

I've been using my flat iron to curl my hair for years now. I have very thick hair, that used to be very long! My hair didn't really hold curl well, but the flat iron curls WORK WELL! I usually spray my hair down with a heat protector styling spray before I blow dry... That gives just enough product to really make the curls hold. My hair is shorter now but will hold curl for days if I don't wash it. Also, my daughter's hair is very long, thick, and never held curl from a curling iron, but her hair holds these curls!! Good luck!

Hair that doesn't curl or curls and straightens quickly is lacking protein. Use a good protein shampoo and conditioner and a preheat smoothing lotion. It was protect your hair from the heat and the lotion will keep the curl lasting longer. Flat irons are typically hotter than curling irons, so you should get a better result

Try the sock bun for curls. I love this one the most. (DO this on hair that is almost completely dry.) Flip your hair over your head and gather into a high ponytail (on top of your head). Use an old sock that has the toes cut off. Start at the end of the ponytail and roll it through the sock until it looks like a bun. I secure it with bobby pins. I do this before going to bed or early in the morning if going out at night. The tighter you roll it the tighter the curls. I use a light amount of hair spray on the bun. My hair is permed so the curls last me 2 days. Good luck!! look up Sock Buns on Pinterest or Youtube videos for help.

Ok so i dont get it. When i flip the straightner do i loop the hair inside the straightner so the hair is wrapped around the inside of it? Or do i wrap ot around the whole straightner? The picture above is a little confusing with the instructions, because it doesnt say anywhere to wrap the hair around inside the straightner yet she has hers wrapped inside of it..,

Reply
Elyse

you don't wrap the hair at all. Once you flip the straightener, the hair automatically wraps around one side of the flat iron, you don't have to do any extra work except possibly making sure the strand of hair stays on the plates as you continue to drag the straightener down your hair.

If you want your curls to stand out, flip the straightener towards your face/away from your face with every other curl you do. If you do every curl the same direction, they start to stick together and aren't as obvious. It's your preference!

You take the hair and clamp it in the straightener like you were going to straighten it, but then you tilt the straightener 180(half a circle) in any direction you want.. In the picture I believe she tilted it in, toward her for the 180 degrees

Try flipping the straightener a full 360 degrees so that the end of your hair is now facing down and your hair will be wrapped fully around the straightener. Then just pull gently as if straightening your hair but hold onto the end of the strand to guide it through. I also like to rotate my wrist (in the same direction as when you flipped it) at the very end to make a tighter curl on the ends.

i have just recently discovered how to curl my hair with my straightener.. i have done it the past several days i used to use a 1/2" curling rod but my hair has gotten longer and is too long for it so i use my 1" straightener.. the hardest part for me is curling the right side of my head bc i have to turn the straightener a different way to get the curls to turn away from my face.. also if you start curling at different points of your hair and curl them in different directions it will create a fuller curler look..

I've been curling my hair with a flat iron for over 3 years now and I would say that I have "mastered" the art of curling. I have found that when I want tighter curls, I put my flat iron on the highest setting to give it more of a hold. Whenever I want loose waves, I lower the temperature so they fall out a bit. Also, I hold my flat iron vertically, as opposed to horizontally like a curling iron, and twist it away from my face to curl my hair. I'll have to try holding it this way to see if it yields different results!

My hair also will not hold a curl with a curling iron BUT it will hold with a flat iron. Not sure why (maybe the heat is higher). I don't even need hairspray.

Reply
Jenn
10/13/2012 02:04:23 am

My hair also doesn't hold curl very well/very long, it's thick and heavy. I use a bit of product first, on dry/very slightly damp hair. If its too damp it won't hold for me. Then use flat iron on med/high so I don't burn my hair. I do each curl in opposite direction because I like the definition. Like stated above, if you curl in the same direction, the curls will eventually all blend together. I end up with a few huge rolls of hair and I don't care for that look. When I'm done I spray the whole thing and it lasts all day/night. Sometimes I don't use any product, the curls eventually fall out but it still has nice waves. Tip- don't pause anywhere, you will end up with a crease, keep moving (slowly for tighter curls) all the way to the end.

6/28/2012 01:22:02 pm

How do you avoid the crease at the top of the curl?

Reply
Emilee
6/30/2012 06:46:49 am

If you follow the directions, it says to start straight, and then flip the curling iron. There shouldn't be a crease unless you stop for a moment. If your iron is set on a very high temperature, it takes less time to crease when you stop. Just try to keep it moving, even if it's slow, just don't stop. Remember, heat doesn't MAKE your hair behave. Heat is the process of making your hair maneuverable, it's how it cools off, that changes how your hair turns out. Don't damage your hair :)

This look is super cute, but a heads up!!!! If your hair is DAMAGED ( extremely dry, bleached, etc.) Don't do this, especially don't spray hairspray on it and then try it. The high heat (over 350º) will FRY your hair and cause breakage

Carolyn- it could be the straightener (narrow, rounded ceramic plates at 200 degrees celsius works best) or your hair type. I find it doesn't always work as well with really smooth shiny hair. Try not to pull your hair too tightly as you guide the straightener along, otherwise it might straighten instead of curl. The trick is to make sure it is twisted into a curl as it cools. I like to twist the hot curl around my fingers immediately after it drops from the straightener (make sure you twist in in the right direction). I twirl my fingers around the strand to help define and smooth the curl. You only have a few seconds to do this while the hair is hot and mouldable. You can also hold it in a tight curl in your hand until it cools. With some hair types, the hair is heavy enough that it might stretch the curl out while it is still hot unless you give the curl a bit of encouragement by twisting it through your fingers.

If you want waves instead of curls, only flip the straighter 180 degrees and catch the end of the curl and hold it before it has the chance to twist into a curl form.

I know exactly what you mean, I used to have the same problem. But I realised I was doing it wrong. Just tiiiiny details. Don't clamp down on the iron, just hold the hair really lightly between the plates. And the trick is to go really, i mean really, slow. I also found it helped when I took the hair and sort of whipped it over the iron when doing the 180. You go down like straightening, then turn the iron 180 and let your hair go/put your hair the same way, so it forms an U, with the iron in the "bottom" of the U, your head at one end of the U, and your ends at the other end.

try to adjust the temperature of your flat iron. if that doesnt work try not to put as much pressure if you have thin hair and the opposite for thick hair.

Thanks sooo much for this tutorial. My friend does this all the time and it blows my mind that she does it with a straightener. Can I do this even though my hair is dyed??? or will it ruin my hair???

I am a licensed hairstylist (with extremely straight, stubborn hair) and while the flat iron curls give the best result for all types, please know the MOST common cause of damage I see, is that someone didn't understand the heat settings on their flat iron. It isn't different then a regular iron-- put a iron on cotton setting onto synthetic fabric, it melts. Higher heat is for courser, curlier hair. If your hair is naturally straight or has medium to course texture, always use a medium to low setting!

I tried this and I have hair that is very easy to curl it worked when a hairstylist did it on me...my hair just gets wound so tightly it's hard to drag it down... What am I doing wrong? I ended up pulling my hair out of my head and burning my hand!

You're holding too tight... You don't need to clamp down, like you do when flattening the hair. It's more important to go sloooow, than hard. If you do it real slow, it will curl, even if the hair is just "lying" between the plates.

I literally just got up and tried this, loved the curl that I got but I also ended up with a crease line where I started the curl...is there any way to remedy this? I have a babyliss pro nano titanium 1" straightener.

Ok so I had heard about using ur flat iron to curl ur hair but I never thought that it would actually work on my hair becuz my hair is so stubborn and won't curl to save my life. I just tried it and it worked. I would like a tighter curl though but now that I know it works and can keep practicing and get it the way I want it. This just made my day. I used to have to put my hair in hot sticks and wear them over night to get wavy hair. Love love love this. Thanks!!

I think I might have been doing it wrong because all that happened was I got a weird bump where I flipped the flat iron... I made sure the hair didn't slip out and all that. I think I might try it once I get my hair cut though. It's thick and stubborn.

OMG this is the coolest trick ever. So easy and so quick! I don't have a curling iron and suck at using them, so I was intrigued to try this. Worked great! Some thoughts: close but don't squeeze the straightener; go slower than you would normally (or well, I needed to slow down); if it doesn't work, try going slower or using a thinner/smaller section; if you put some product on first, the curls are tighter (at least they were for me). My mom, sister, and friends are jealous!

I don't understand why this won't ever work for my hair. I'll get like 2 strands to work and then then the rest won't take and all they do is straighten my hair and then it's all over, no chance of getting it to try and curl again. And it's not just your technique, it's every flat iron version I've tried. I guess I'll have to stick to a curling iron. :(

It may work for some people but not for me
I have shoulder length baby fine thick hair ... Like really thick . It's like parts are wavy parts are stick straight and some are ringlet curls ... Pretty annoying !
Anyway
I tried rhi lots of times with different methods and got the same product .. Fizzy poofyness ... It might just be my hair though
My cousin on the other hand
Who has short ( like ear length ) layerd baby fine thin hair
Stick straight and it worked ok .. Kind of
The first time it turned out looking somewhere between ' o my goodness Einstein hair ' to ' i just got hit by a tornado '
The next time it was another story
It came out with some ringlets but mostly just waves ... It was actually VEARY pretty ... Until we let it sit
It kind if poofed .... Like bad
Maybe because we didnt use hair spray or anything
Over all I really don't know ! It may work and it may not . Thanks for the AWSOME tutorial!!
